The 31st Annual Conference of the Northern Ireland Heritage Garden Trust (NIHGT) on The World of Bulbs: Their history, propagation and use in the garden throughout the year.

Talks will explore a range of topics including:
  • The history of commercial bulb and tuber breeding in Ireland (19th century onwards)
  • Propagation methods used by bulb nurseries and how stock is produced commercially
  • Historic bulb varieties, bulbs in art, bulbs in the wild
  • How bulbs were planted in gardens from the 17th century onwards

Polly Nicholson will be speaking at the conference on the subject of growing tulips sustainably, basing the talk on her experience of growing annual, species and historical tulips at her home in Wiltshire.  She will demonstrate, with the use of imagery shot at Blacklands by Andrew Montgomery, how it is possible to create perennial tulip displays and nurture a National Collection using organic methods and careful husbandry.
