TULIPOMANIA WITH SHANE CONNOLLY AND ANNA PAVORD
THURSDAY 27TH APRIL 2017
10 00 – 3 30
Join Shane Connolly and and Anna Pavord for an exclusive Tulip Day at Bayntun Flowers in Wiltshire.
"I’m obsessed with tulips. Fully subscribed to that mania. But Polly’s tulips, and especially the rare and antique varieties she grows, completely push me over the edge of sanity. I may well have to be sedated to be able to speak at all. I cannot wait to spend the day with these beauties."
The day will begin with Anna Pavord, world authority and author of The Tulip and The Bulb, telling us a little of ‘the story of a flower that has made men mad’, and presenting examples of some of the rare historical bulbs we are growing this year.
Polly Nicholson of Bayntun Flowers will then take you on a tour of her Cutting Garden and flower field, where you will find tulips planted in a formal potager setting, in overflowing rustic containers, and in more agricultural rows. She will guide you through the sourcing of bulbs, how to plant them and the best ways to harvest and condition for floristry.
Back in the greenhouse Shane Connolly will create one of his stunning seasonal arrangements, incorporating historical Rembrandt and Breeder tulips, weaving in freshly cut spring flowers and foliage. His environmental ethos aligns perfectly with ours, and we are very excited about seeing him work his floral alchemy with our organically grown flowers. His unique knowledge not only of the flowers themselves, but also of their meaning, will lend deeper layers to the experience.
After a lunch of home-grown produce it is your chance to create your own hand-tied bunches, helped by Shane and Polly, which will be beautifully wrapped ready for you to take home.
Britt Willoughby-Dyer, a renowned garden and flower photographer will be taking photographs on the day.
You will be able to order prints or downloads directly from her.
Number of places limited to 15.
The cost includes tea/coffee and homemade cakes, and a two-course lunch with wine.
Please bring cheques or cash if you would like to buy a copy of Shane’s new book ‘Discovering the Meaning of Flowers’, sweet pea seedings, cut flowers or Vintage gardenalia.
Course fee payable at time of booking by BACS, please email email@example.com for bank details.
Born in Northern Ireland, Shane has had a lifelong interest in horticulture. After meeting the great British floral designer Michael Goulding OBE, his passion turned specifically to the art of flower design. Under Michael’s direction Shane trained at the famous London establishment of Pulbrook & Gould, and he started his own business in 1989.
Shane has always had an organic approach to his designs, where flowers are used primarily for their own intrinsic qualities. And designs aim to flatter those idiosyncrasies. This quirky, unpretentious style has been heralded for its elegance and originality.
Shane’s international work has taken him all over Europe and as far afield as USA, South Africa and India. Back in the UK, he has decorated some the country’s most prestigious venues for an eclectic range of private and corporate clients. Alongside illustrious companies and individuals, Shane also counts London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts as two of his most valued clients, and he thoroughly enjoys the challenge of designing events around the ever changing and varied exhibitions in both venues.
In 2005, he was honoured and delighted to be asked by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall to design her bouquet and all other flowers for her marriage to HRH Prince of Wales and the service of dedication in Windsor Castle. In recognition of this, he was awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales in 2006.
In 2011 Shane was appointed Artistic Director for the wedding of TRH’s The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. And was awarded a second Royal Warrant of Appointment, to HM The Queen in 2015. Shane’s client list has been described by Harpers & Queen magazine as “enviable” and his discretion is legendary.
